TOKORO Yasuhiro Seminar of the School of Commerce held an academic exchange meeting online on March 6 with HONSEI Kozo, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan to Mexico.

This exchange was made possible through a six-month project in which seminar students produced a 42-page cultural public relations magazine on Mexico as part of the 2025 grant project of the Mexico–Japan Friendship Fund (Fondo de la Amistad), jointly operated by the governments of Mexico and Japan (the Mexican Secretariat of Public Education and the Embassy of Japan in Mexico). The meeting served both to report the results of this magazine project and to provide a forum for direct dialogue between the Ambassador and the seminar students.

At the exchange meeting, the seminar students reported not only their research findings but also highlighted the new discoveries they gained through surveys and interviews, sharing how these activities deepened their understanding of Mexican society and culture.

During the subsequent question-and-answer session, the students asked Ambassador HONSEI about the leadership required in diplomatic settings and the skills needed to be active in the international community. In response, the Ambassador stated that, when engaging in activities abroad, having a clear sense of what one wants to convey is more important than language proficiency. He emphasized that being able to articulate what kind of country Japan is and what personal values one holds is essential for building trust in the international community.

At the end of the exchange meeting, the Ambassador also noted that a Japan national team match in the FIFA World Cup 2026, to be held in June, is scheduled to take place in Monterrey, Mexico, and encouraged the seminar students to remember this day’s exchange when that moment comes.

The completed magazine was distributed free of charge at the Autumn Festival, a Japanese cultural event held in Mexico City in fall 2025. It is also scheduled to be distributed at a large-scale Japanese cultural event (expected to attract approximately 15,000 visitors) in May in conjunction with the National Nikkei Convention of Mexico.
