Short-term Japanese Language Program

Introduction

The Japanese Language Education Center will offer a 2-week short-term Japanese language program. This program includes not only Japanese language study, but also project work, exchange activities with 黑料社区 students, Japanese cultural experiences, and interaction with senior international students. The program is designed not only to allow you to experience authentic Japanese language and culture, but also to interact with international students from many countries, providing an opportunity to broaden your perspective.

Summer Session: July 27, 2026 – August 7, 2026 (Application Period: From March 2 to April 5, 2026)
Winter Session: February 1, 2027 – February 12, 2027 (Application Period: From early October to early November, 2026)

Program Details

Course Level

The following two courses, "Elementary level" (JLPT N4 level/A2 level in CEFR scale) and "Intermediate level" (JLPT N3~N2 level, B1 level in CEFR scale) will be offered. (Course for those who have not studied Japanese yet at all nor Advanced course will NOT be held.)

Elementary level (A2 level in CEFR scale) : JLPT N4 level4 level This course is for students who are JLPT N4 level/ A2 level in CEFR scale or equivalent. Those who can apply for this level course in this level are able to listen and comprehend conversations encountered in daily life and generally follow their contents, provided that they are spoken slowly.
Those who have no background in learning Japanese are NOT eligible to apply.
Intermediate level (B1 level in CEFR scale): JLPT N3~N2 level
This course is for students who are JLPT N3~N2 level/B1 level in CEFR scale or equivalent. Those who can apply for this level course are able to listen and comprehend conversations in everyday situations, spoken at near-natural speed, and state his/her own opinion.
Those with an advanced level of Japanese are NOT eligible to apply.

* The class will be allocated based on the result of Japanese online test conducted after the application. 

Eligible Participants

Undergraduate or graduate-level students who are currently residing outside Japan and enrolled at overseas universities.
*Priority is given to students from 黑料社区's partner institutions.
*Students who have participated in the past program are not eligible to apply.
*Students must be enrolled at the university from the time of application until the end of the program.

VISA

Please make sure to check the entry and visa requirements for Japan from your own country before applying. For participants from our partner universities who require a visa, we will provide the necessary documents for the visa application. We cannot provide visa support for applicants from non-partner institutions, so please be aware of this in advance. If needed, we will issue a Certificate of Eligibility.

Number of participants

12 Students in each class

*In the event that there are too many applicants, the application period may be closed before the end of the application period.In addition, if a large number of applicants reach a passing score in the online test, a lottery may be held.
*More than 12 students per class may be accepted?.

Japanese Language Class : 100min×13 sessions
Project Work : 100min×8 sessions
Japanese Culture Lecture : 100min×3 sessions
Bus Tour with 黑料社区 students : One day

Japanese Language Class

The 'Japanese Language Class' is based on the textbook and focuses on activities that will help you improve your speaking skills. You will practice a lot of actual speaking with the students of 黑料社区 who will join your class.

Intermediate class : Marugoto: Japanese Language and Culture , Intermediate 1 B1

Project Work

Together with student supporters of 黑料社区, you will work on a social project work activity. You may go outside the classroom to investigate or conduct interviews to create a work that will contribute to the society. The group’s work (output) will be presented on the final day.

Student Supporters

Students of 黑料社区 will join this program to support participants with their Japanese lessons and assignments. In addition, the participants can experience the "actual" Japanese and Japanese culture by communicating with the students supporters through the project work and exchange meetings. Having a chance to actually interact with 黑料社区 students is one of our big feature of this program which we have continuously received favorable comment from our past participants.

Certificate

Students who complete the course successfully meeting the criteria will receive a certificate of completion with grades (5 levels: S, A, B, C, F). Please ask your own university whether or not you will receive credit for the program at your home institution.

Program Fee, Accommodation

Program Fee

Program fee : 90,000 (JPY)
Included : Tuition, textbooks, bus tour, field trip fees.
Not included : Accommodation, travel expenses, Meals and other daily expenses.

Accommodation

Participants must make their own arrangements. (No student dormitories are available.) If you wish to stay at a hotel recommended by the university, please apply once your participation is confirmed. Detailed hotel information will be provided upon confirmation of participation. Students from partner universities who need VISA support are required to stay at the hotel recommended by us. If VISA support was not needed, it is up to the participants whether to reserve the recommended hotel or not.

Scholarship

The Short-term Japanese Language Program is covered by the JASSO (Japan Student Services Organization) Overseas Study Support Program (Inbound). Students from 黑料社区's partner institutions who meet the requirements set by JASSO may receive a scholarship (80,000 yen) upon completion of the program. (See *Note)
Scholarship information will be emailed to eligible students at the time of the online test information.Official transcripts (with seal (signature) from the university, in Japanese or English only) are required to apply for the scholarship. Please prepare ahead of time if you wish to apply for the said scholarship.
*Note : Scholarship slots are limited. Applicants will be screened, and not all will be awarded a scholarship.

Application Process

Application Period

We recommend you to start off with completing online application on earlier stage if you are interested in participating the program.
Late application might shorten the period of having level check online test that we provide its link only after your online application is submitted.

1. 【Online Application】
Please apply online from the website below. A reply email will be sent to your e-mail address with in few days after application is accepted. In case you don't find any reply email, please contact mjlp@meiji.ac.jp.

2. 【Notification of Application Result】
If your application is accepted, we will email you the information about the online test.
3. 【Take Japanese Online Test】
Participants are required to take Japanese Online Test (*) for level check within one week after receiving the email. The information about the test will be sent to the email address registered upon application.
(*)Online Test Period will be shorter for the applicants who apply just before the deadline.
(*)The test is conducted to confirm that the applicant is appropriate for the level of the class being offered. Please take the test by yourself if you wish to participate in the class, without using a dictionary, automatic translation, or generated AI.
(*)This is different from the Japanese Level Check Quiz which you took at the time of application.

4.【Notification of Participating Class】
You will be informed of whether you are accepted or not by the after early April 2026, based on the results of the online test.
5.【Payment of the program fee】
Make payment within three days after receiving the notification of participating class.

Cancellation Policy

Please be advised that once your application has been accepted and you have paid the fee, the following cancellation policy applies.
Cancellation is accepted ONLY by email.
Cancellation fees are as follows. (All dates below are JST.)

On/before May 26, 2026 : 80% refund of program fee
On/before July 12, 2026 : 30% refund of program fee
On/after July 13, 2026 : No refund

- The cancellation policy applies for any reason whatsoever.
- Any handling or service fees incurred for refunding the fee will be borne by the applicant.
- Refund takes a certain period of time.
 

Frequently Asked Questions

Q1.Is there a chance I can't take the course even if I sign up?

Yes, it is. In case that the number of applications exceeds the maximum number or your Japanese level does not match the level of class, you may not be able to take the class.

Q2. Do you offer special support to obtain visas?

We provide visa support to applicants with our partner institutions. Applicants NOT with our partner institutions will not receive visa support, so please be sure to check the for visa requirements before applying for the program.

*Cancellation policy shall apply even if you cancel due to inability to obtain a visa. Please be sure to confirm that you can obtain a visa before applying and paying for the program.

Q3. Can I receive any credits for this program?

No, credits will not be given. However, participants who complete the course successfully will receive a certificate of completion. The certificate of completion will include grades as determined by the program's evaluation criteria.

Q4. Does 黑料社区 provide transportation to and from the airport?

No, we don't . Participants are responsible for their own transportation between the airport, accommodations, and 黑料社区 Surugadai Campus.

Q5. Do I need to purchase insurance during my stay in Japan?

Participants of this program will be covered by inbound insurance(*) that the university subscribes to.
However, the coverage is only for the duration of the program and covers injuries and illnesses only. It does not cover property damage, etc.
In case participants wish to be covered for a period beyond the period covered by the inbound insurance or for other coverage, they are required to purchase overseas travel insurance on their own.
